The Lima Major, the first Dota Pro Circuit event of 2023, ended on the evening of March 5. The event had many surprises in terms of results, but was not as successful as the previous majors when it came to viewership statistics. The growth of the Spanish-speaking audience could not compensate for the decrease of spectators on Russian- and English-language broadcasts. As a result, the tournament in Peru has ranked only ninth by Peak Viewers among all Dota 2 majors.

The Lima Major 2023 Results

After the Group Stage came to an end, 12 teams made it to the playoffs of The Lima Major 2023. They were seeded in the upper and lower divisions of the double-elimination bracket, depending on their results in the groups. In the final part of the tournament, the European teams continued to dominate the competition, while Chinese representatives, on the contrary, were eliminated first.

In the final match of The Lima Major 2023, two teams from Western Europe, Gaimin Gladiators and Team Liquid, clashed. Both teams were the best in their respective groups and showed strong performance during the whole tournament, but they didn't manage to have an epic final battle for the title. Two days before the end of the championship, Team Liquid player Boxi had to leave urgently due to health problems (his place in the finals was taken by the team's analyst). Playing with an emergency substitution, Team Liquid couldn't show its best game, so Gaimin Gladiators soundly defeated its opponents 3-0. In addition to the title, the Seleri lineup got $200K and 400 DPC ranking points.

The Lima Major 2023 Viewership Statistics

The Lima Major was not able to surpass the 500K PV viewers

The Lima Major 2023 matches lasted 123 hours and amassed 32.4 million Hours Watched in that time, drawing 262.2K Average Viewers. The Grand Final between Team Liquid and Gaimin Gladiators saw 491.3K Peak Viewers

The tournament was not able to surpass the 500K PV viewers mark, with only four matches reaching over 400K PV. At the same time, the Grand Final didn't have a distinct separation from the other matches, like it usually does at major tournaments. This can be explained by the fact that Team Liquid and Gaimin Gladiators had already faced each other the day before in the upper bracket final — back then Liquid had already played with standin and had lost completely to the future champion.

Talon Esports, which took third place, became the most-watched team of the tournament, with its matches accumulating 7 million HW. It is important to note that Talon Esports played more series in the playoffs than other participants in the tournament. Comparing the Average Viewers numbers on broadcasts, the Peruvian team Evil Geniuses is in the lead with 182.4K AV.

Comparison of The Lima Major 2023 with Previous Majors

We have already noted that The Lima Major 2023 lags behind PGL Arlington Major 2022 by about 8% in terms of viewership in the Group Stage. During the playoffs, the gap between the tournaments increased even more.

The Peak Viewers number at The Lima Major 2023 final was 30.5% lower than at the last year's Arlington Major final. Overall, the tournament in Peru has become only ninth among all Dota 2 majors. The Kyiv Major 2017 is still the unchallenged leader here, with 842.5K PV.

The lag in the Average Viewers number is fewer by 13%. This figure looks more relevant for comparison, as it is less dependent on time zones, formats or participating teams.

At the same time, The Lima Major 2023 showed quite a good result in terms of Hours Watched — the tournament has become the third among all Dota 2 majors, behind only WePlay AniMajor and PGL Arlington Major.
