Overwatch World Cup 2023 was the most popular event of the year for the discipline

Overwatch World Cup 2023 was the most popular event of the year for the discipline

Nov 06, 2023 5 min read

The Overwatch World Cup returned to esports this year, and it was the first time that the event featured the sequel Overwatch 2. Due to the pandemic and Blizzard’s legal issues, the tournament hadn’t occurred since 2019. With such a long wait for this year’s World Cup, the viewership for the event reflected the excitement and anticipation of the community for this prestigious tournament.

The 2023 Overwatch World Cup returned to Anaheim for its most recent iteration, at the Anaheim Convention Center. The event featured teams from the Americas, EMEA region, and Asia-Pacific region. South Korea won the first three world titles from 2016-2018, and the prior event in 2019 saw the United States take home the championship. Was South Korea able to add to its record, or did the change to Overwatch 2 see a new champion emerge?

Overwatch World Cup 2023 Viewership

In total, this year’s World Cup event saw over 5.5M Hours Watched collected throughout the event. Twitch was by far the preferred platform for fans from around the world to spectate from, and the event garnered 318.7K Peak Viewers.

The most popular match of the event was the Semifinals match between Finland and Saudi Arabia. Arabic was the second-most-popular language of the event and reached 108.3K Peak Viewers during this game. However, the Grand final between China and Saudi Arabia was even more popular with Arabic-speaking fans, and this game saw 114.4K Peak Viewers from this audience.

Chinese live-streaming platforms produce unreliable viewership statistics that we cannot include in our data. This would usually be a factor in the China vs Saudi Arabia final not being the most popular match but last year Blizzard shut down the Overwatch 2 servers in mainland China.

Without a playable version of the game for fans in mainland China, attention and interest in Overwatch has quickly dwindled. The Overwatch World Cup 2023 would likely have reached an even higher PV figure if another team faced off against Saudi Arabia in the Grand Final.

Arabic-speaking community casters were hugely influential to the World Cup’s viewership, as casters on Twitch and Kick supported their local team as they advanced through the playoffs to claim their first championship.

Apart from English and Arabic-speaking audiences, no other regions showed particular interest in this event. Korean was the third-most-popular language of the event but was only able to achieve 21.8K Peak Viewers. Although South Korean teams have often performed exceptionally well at the Overwatch World Cup, viewership has never been particularly high for the event from this region.

Compared to other Overwatch World Cup events, the 2023 World Cup was the second-ever iteration of the tournament to reach more than 300K Peak Viewers. The 2023 event was also the most-watched iteration of the event, but it was live for more than double the time of the 2017 and 2018 World Cups.

In general, viewership for Overwatch has been dwindling over the past years. Taking the Overwatch League as a case study, the esports discipline has not been able to retain the popularity it achieved at release. 2022 was the most successful year for the league in terms of viewership, but this was an exception as the event year saw highly increased viewership thanks to the release of Overwatch 2.

Although 2022 marked an uptick for the discipline, 2023’s concurrent viewership was halved compared to the previous year. In an esports discipline that has been struggling to generate hype and attention for itself for years, the high viewership for the 2023 World Cup is a welcome surprise for the game.

The 2023 World Cup shows that there is potential for Overwatch if it appeals to the right regional audiences, but it may be difficult to replicate this viewership for the Americentric Overwatch League. The 2023 World Cup was the most popular event of 2023 so far for Overwatch, and will likely hold this title by year’s end.

Perhaps Blizzard will shift their focus in the sports discipline to more international events to generate a more diverse source of viewership, but only time will tell.
