PGL Cluj-Napoca 2025’s group stage shows strong start for PGL’s return to regular events
PGL Cluj-Napoca 2025 is the event organizer's first Counter-Strike event of the year, with many more to follow. Yesterday, the Group Stage for the tournament concluded, and Esports Charts has collated viewership data for the stage. As it stands, Cluj-Napoca hasn’t broken any records, but it has put a strong foot forward for PGL’s debut tournament of the year.
Throughout 2025 and 2026, PGL have a comprehensive Counter-Strike 2 schedule planned. The organizer will visit Romania, Serbia, and Kazakhstan for these new tournaments, with two other locations yet to be announced for the Fall and Summer 2026 events. After years of waiting, Counter-Strike fans can again enjoy multiple PGL events in a year.

The Group Stage of the event saw 16 of the world’s best, according to the Valve Ranking System, come together to compete for a playoffs spot, where they can earn a significant portion of the $1,250,000 prize pool. Unfortunately, not all the world’s best were available to compete in the event; G2 Esports, Team Spirit, Team Vitality, and NAVI all did not attend. These teams boast some of Counter-Strike’s largest audiences, and they are sorely missed.
Despite the event not featuring these top teams, it was still able to record strong viewership results. The Group Stage recorded 8,850,000 Hours Watched and reached 315,719 Peak Viewers. All in all, this viewership is roughly 25-30% lower than that achieved during the recent IEM Katowice 2025 Group Stage. Considering the top teams not in attendance of Cluj-Napoca, and IEM Katowice’s historic legacy as a premier Counter-Strike event, the tournament has done well to reach the viewership it has.

FaZe Clan’s game against Eternal Fire was the most popular match of the stage, having fallen just short of reaching 300,000 viewers. The event’s overall peak viewership was able to surmount 300,000, due to overlaps between matches. Interestingly, all three of the most popular games went to the final map of the series. Going to the third map of the best-of-three has another level of excitement to it, and this is the extra push the games needed to reach their high viewerships.
Just 10 days before the event began, FURIA Esports withdrew from the tournament, leaving PGL to find another participant. In the end, they invited Imperial Valkyries, who were the next-highest-ranking team who were available to compete. Although Imperial’s female squad have driven viewership to exciting levels at previous events, this was not replicated at Cluj-Napoca 2025.
The PGL Cluj-Napoca 2025 was a strong result for PGL’s return as a regular organizer in Counter-Strike’s calendar. While the Group Stage was not as popular as that of IEM Katowice 2025 or the recent inaugural BLAST Bounty, it still maintained strong viewership. In the future, if PGL is able to secure more of the world’s best teams at their events, they could likely reach viewership rivalling that of Counter-Strike’s most popular tournaments.
The Playoffs for the tournament begin on Friday, February 21, with all four Quarterfinals scheduled to finish on this day. The playoffs will conclude on Sunday, with the event also hosting a third-place match in the afternoon, something not every Counter-Strike tournament does.
