Spanish broadcasts of Riyadh Masters 2023 group stage are up 202% year-over-year
The group stage of the Riyadh Masters 2023 ended on July 24. One of the largest Dota 2 tournaments in the current season falls behind last year's edition in terms of peak viewership, but surpasses it by total Hours Watched and Airtime. Esports Charts has prepared intermediate audience statistics for the event.
The group stage of Riyadh Masters 2023 eliminated four weakest participants and allocated the remaining teams to the upper and lower brackets of the playoffs. Quest Esports emerged as the leader in Group A — the only team that did not suffer a single defeat in the group stage. In Group B, BetBoom Team showed the strongest performance.
Speaking of eliminations, after the group stage, OG, Xtreme Gaming, TSM, and Shopify Rebellion have left the tournament. The elimination of the last two teams means that there are no more squads from North America in the event. As for OG, it played the entire tournament with a stand-in and could not fully showcase its potential, while Xtreme Gaming simply performed poorly. Overall, the group stage of the tournament did not change the main trends of the professional scene. Teams from Western and Eastern Europe continue to demonstrate the best gameplay, while representatives from other regions play catch-up.

The group stage matches of Riyadh Masters 2023 accumulated 7.4 million Hours Watched. The Average Viewers number during the broadcasts was 160.8K, with the Peak Viewers number reaching 280.3K. Riyadh Masters 2023 slightly lagged behind Riyadh Masters 2022 in terms of Average and Peak Viewers, with a decrease of approximately 8% and 10%, respectively. However, the total Hours Watched number for the tournament increased by 36%, while the Airtime increased by 52%. This growth can be attributed to the larger number of participants. In the previous tournament, there were only five teams in each group, while this year there are eight teams in each group.
When it comes to broadcast languages, English and Russian saw a slight decline in viewership during the group stage of Riyadh Masters 2023. Compared to last year's tournament, they lost 24% and 6% respectively. This partial decrease can be attributed to the growing popularity of other languages. For example, Spanish broadcasts experienced a staggering 202% growth and reached 43.8K PV, thanks to the participation of two teams from South America. Tagalog and Ukrainian languages also showed significant growth.
It is worth noting that the format of the broadcasts played a significant role in the decline of audience reach. In Riyadh Masters 2022, only two matches were held simultaneously, while Riyadh Masters 2023 featured up to four parallel games. This greatly diluted the viewership, with the matches essentially competing with each other for the viewers' attention.
Riyadh Masters 2023 is the largest independent Dota 2 tournament in 2023. Its prize pool amounts to $15 million, surpassing even some of Valve's past World Championships. Additionally, Riyadh Masters serves as the final rehearsal tournament before The International 2023. The best teams in the world have gathered in Saudi Arabia, the majority of which will compete in the main tournament of the year later in the autumn.
The playoffs stage of Riyadh Masters 2023 will take place from 25 to 30 July. You can follow the progress of the event on the coverage page.
