Twitch Rivals in H1, 2024: Trends, Language Dynamics, Top Channels and More
Over the past few years, Twitch Rivals has transformed from a simple tournament series into a prominent streaming brand. These championships bring together popular content creators worldwide and serve as a powerful platform for launching new games. By participating in these tournaments, streamers expand their fan base, while viewers enjoy a unique spectacle, witnessing their favorite creators in action up close.
Although Twitch Rivals tournaments are primarily focused on entertainment rather than competition, some events can rival major esports tournaments in terms of prize money and audience size. In the first half of 2024, Twitch Rivals organized 20 tournaments, featuring competitive games like Fortnite, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and Apex Legends, alongside rising cooperative titles such as Party Animals and Palworld.
The standout tournament during this period was Twitch Rivals: Hunt & Run w/ IlloJuan, ft. Minecraft, held in January. This event peaked with over 516,300 concurrent viewers and was streamed on more than 150 different channels. Renowned Spanish-speaking streamers like ElSpreen, Auronplay, Rivers, elxokas, and TheGrefg joined IlloJuan in this event. Hunt & Run followed the success of Twitch Rivals Squid Craft, another top Minecraft event that drew over 1.6 million Peak Viewers in 2023. Despite not reaching those heights, Hunt & Run reaffirmed that the combination of "Spanish streamers + Minecraft" guarantees Twitch Rivals a vast audience and impressive viewership statistics.

Among the top tournaments, May's Jynxzi x Rainbow Six Siege: 1v1 Brawl on Twitch Rivals stood out, reaching a peak of 175,900 concurrent viewers. This event brought together numerous streamers renowned for their skills in shooter games, including shroud, OhnePixel, Summit1g, MoistCr1tikal, Jynxzi himself, and others. Jynxzi's 1v1 Brawl marked a milestone as the most popular Rainbow Six tournament in Twitch Rivals history, with more than a dozen similar events following suit.
The viewership trends across the halves of the year showed significant variability. In the first half of 2023, the standout event Twitch Rivals Squid Craft Games 2 made a substantial impact, amassing 22.6 million hours of watch time and peaking at 1.68 million concurrent viewers. Even excluding this event, there was a noticeable decline in watch time, from 16.6 million to 10.5 million.
Overall, the series began to exhibit slightly reduced viewership compared to previous periods, largely due to Twitch Rivals organizing fewer events overall. In the first half of 2024, there were 20 tournaments, whereas the average for each half-year in 2023 was 28 events.
Twitch has adopted a more discerning approach to game selection. In 2024, there were notably fewer tournaments for Fortnite, and events for Among Us, Fall Guys, Hearthstone, and chess were absent. Instead, new titles like Palworld and IRacing emerged as part of Twitch Rivals' evolving lineup.

From the discernible trends, it's evident that Twitch Rivals events centered around Minecraft consistently draw a large audience. This game attracts numerous top streamers, particularly in Spain. Twitch Rivals tournaments featuring new, highly anticipated games also garner significant viewership. For example, the Twitch Rivals Party Animals Launch Showdown peaked at 141,500 concurrent viewers.
In the first half of 2024, Spanish emerged as the predominant language for Twitch Rivals broadcasts, accounting for approximately 57.5% of the total Hours Watched across all tournaments during that period. English followed closely behind with 38.8%. Why is the Spanish share so large? The nature of Twitch Rivals tournaments — emphasizing interactions among top streamers — resonates strongly with Spanish content creators. Despite the Spanish Twitch community being smaller than the English-speaking one, it is more tightly knit. Spanish streamers frequently collaborate in streams, and participate in the same entertainment shows, tournaments, and more. Such mutual engagement with both peers and the audience is commonplace among them.
Another factor driving the rise of Spanish-language streams is the popularity of major Minecraft events like Squid Craft and Hunt & Run. These events, involving top Spanish streamers, accumulate extensive watch time, surpassing broadcasts in other languages significantly. In the first half of 2024, combined Spanish and English broadcasts comprised around 96% of total Twitch Rivals viewing hours.
Meanwhile, the viewership share of other languages such as French and German has steadily declined. In the first quarter of 2023, these languages collectively accounted for over 5.5% of Twitch Rivals' total watch time. By the first half of 2024, their combined share had decreased to 2.4%.

In terms of popular games, Minecraft led in watch time during the first half of 2024, comprising about 67.7% of all Twitch Rivals tournament HW. This dominance was bolstered by community casting from prominent Spanish streamers. For example, the standout tournament during this period was Twitch Rivals: Hunt & Run w/ IlloJuan, ft. Minecraft, supported directly by IlloJuan, one of Spain's most popular streamers.
Around 12% of watch time was attributed to non-esports games such as Party Animals, Pokemon, Stardew Valley, and Palworld, along with offline events during TwitchCon festivals. Among esports titles, Rainbow Six, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and Apex Legends ranked prominently in Twitch Rivals events.
The most watched channel throughout Twitch Rivals tournaments in the first half of 2024 was Illojuan's. The Spanish streamer garnered significant audience engagement during Twitch Rivals: Hunt & Run w/ IlloJuan, ft. Minecraft, accumulating 1.4 million HW and 205K PV. ElSpreen accumulated over 800K HW, while Auronplay amassed more than 515K HW across Twitch Rivals tournaments in 2024. Among English-speaking community casters, Jynxzi and shroud amassed the highest watch time with 345K HW and 212K HW respectively.

The official English-language Twitch Rivals channel secured the second position with just over 1 million HW, peaking at 30,000 concurrent viewers.
In the first half of 2024, Twitch Rivals did not host major, hype-generating events like Squid Craft. The overall number of tournaments decreased, though there were significant collaborations in recent months involving figures like Jynxzi, NiceWigg, and other popular content creators known for their prowess in various games. Their participation in Twitch Rivals ensures robust viewership statistics and compelling content for audiences.
There's also a distinct pattern in language dynamics. During major Minecraft events, the presence of Spanish content notably rises, sometimes doubling. In the absence of Minecraft tournaments, Spanish dominance diminishes, and English becomes more prevalent. The shares of other languages, particularly French and German, are gradually declining, collectively accounting for only 2.4% of the total watch time for all Twitch Rivals tournaments in the first half of 2024.
