Last weekend, the Brooklyn Kings Theater hosted the final tournament of the Call of Duty League 2022 regular season. Based on the results of the fourth major, all participants of the league’s decisive championship were determined. But what about the tournament’s viewership? And what are the statistics shown by the league as a whole? We are summing up the results of the event and talking about current Call of Duty esports viewership.

As in the case of other majors of the season,  the teams competed for $500K and CDL qualifying points in Brooklyn. Los Angeles Thieves and New York Subliners faced off in the championship finals, and Kenny “Kenny” Williams’ won with the tense series with the final score of 5:3, thus claiming the first league title.

Interestingly, the New York Subliners made it to the final championship of the season at the very last moment: before the fourth major, the team did not score a single point in the majors of the series and was able to beat the competitors by points scored only thanks to reaching the final.

In total, eight teams qualified for the CDL Championship based on the results of the majors and respective qualifiers. In addition to NYSL & LA Thieves, it were Toronto UltraBoston BreachSeattle Surge (champions of the third major), London Royal RavensOpTic Texas (champions of the first major), and Atlanta FaZe that made it to the Championship. Interestingly, the champions of the second major, the Los Angeles Guerrillas, performed quite poorly at the end of the season and didn’t score enough points to qualify for the event, which will be held in Los Angeles.

CDL 2022 Major 4 Viewership

Some of our readers noted that the number of concurrent viewers during Toronto Ultra vs OpTic Texas reached over 142K people, but the data collection algorithms did not record such peaks. This event involved a third-party broadcast promotion (in-game or other embeddings of video player), which affected the accuracy of the data provided by YouTube.

The last CDL 2022 major showed extremely good online performance. The competition was broadcast for 35.5 hours and during this time generated 2.1M Hours Watched and attracted 60.1 Average Viewers.

It is noteworthy that the final of the competition was only the fourth most popular match of the event (102K Peak Viewers). As usual, viewers mostly followed OpTic Texas, the most popular team in the league: three of their matches were featured in the top 5 at once, and the classic derby against Atlanta FaZe in the lower bracket semi-finals took the first spot with 152.6K Peak Viewers.

As always, the tournament was broadcast exclusively on YouTube and only in English. The most popular channel was the league’s official one.

  CDL 2022 Majors' Viewership

The fourth major of the season showed some of the best viewership results not only in 2022, but throughout the league’s entire history. According to statistics, it was surpassed only by the current season’s opening major, which attracted more Average and Peak Viewers. At the same time, the final event of the regular season turned out to be much more popular compared to the second and third majors: it attracted 54% and 109% more Peak Viewers, respectively.

  Most popular events of CDL

If we compare the past major with all tournaments of the league (including the final championships) it holds the fourth spot in terms of Peak Viewers. Surpassing the competition were the first major of the current season and the final stages of the last two seasons. Leading among the events of the league was Call of Duty League 2020 Finals, which amassed 3.1M Hours Watched and reached 331.5K Peak Viewers. It is ahead of last year's finals by the metric (second spot by PV) by as much as 38%.

Overall, statistics of CDL 2022 regular season indicate a growth of interest in the league. Two majors of the current season entered the top 5 tournaments of the league at once, and this is the best result in the history of the league. The main intrigue now lies in the number of viewers to be gathered by the season finals.

The decisive CDL 2022 Championship will be held August 4-7 in Los Angeles at the Galen Center. Participants will fight for the title and a share of $2.55 million.
