Counter-Strike tier-2 scene in 2024 — organizers remain vital to improvements

Oct 24, 2024 4 min read

The competitive scene in Counter-Strike has had another interesting year, with the lower rungs also seeing numerous organizers conduct tournaments all year round. These companies continue to play a part in the game's esports evolution after the release of its newest iteration last year, with the viewership dynamics here reflective of what fans see at the highest level of competitive play.

The statistics used in this article are based on the current data available for events in the ESC database. Not every event's full stats have been uploaded, as some seasons are ongoing, but they will be updated at the end of the year.

Some of the most prominent organizers for tier-2 CS2 events that offer prize money up to $350,000 are Serbia's Relog Media (RLG), India's Skyesports, and Malta's Eden EsportsThey conduct multiple tournaments each year, especially when there's a gap between bigger events, keeping the entire ecosystem active and fostering an environment where good displays by teams and players can lead to a chance at higher levels.

That is also how the lower rungs of the game's competitive segment play an underrated role in consistently helping shape its esports' success. Some of these organizers schedule more competitions than others, but that only means more exposure for the upcoming players and a wider talent pool to scout from as these events span multiple continents.

The most watched organizer in 2024's tier-2 scene in Counter-Strike when looking at tournaments with maximum prize money of $350,000 is Eden Esports with 7.5M Hours Watched. Its biggest series was the Champion of Champions Tour (CCT), an international tournament circuit that spans multiple regions and runs across the year and has allowed unproven players access to some high-quality action.

Then there is ESL Challenger and Relog Media (RLG), which have so far touched 5.9M HW and 4.8M HW, respectively. In fact, the latter's most recent event, the RES Regional Champions, ended on October 19. It saw eight teams from Europe and Latin America battle it out for a prize pool of $250,000, with Belarusian esports organization Nemiga Gaming claiming its first international LAN trophy and taking home $150,000.

The recently ended RES Regional Champions also reinforced a well-known fact in CS2 esports: that renowned teams will always have something to give, irrespective of performance. In this Belgrade tournament, Brazilian esports organization Fluxo emerged as its most popular side despite exiting in the Group Stage and not having a single entry on the five most popular matches list.

Getting back to organizers, there are also the likes of Skyesports, FISSURE, and GRID that have done well in bringing the game to new circles. India might not be the most renowned name when it comes to the discipline's biggest markets, but there is a certain demand for shooter game competitions. Skyesports provides fans with plenty of action to satiate that hunger while also providing local CS2 teams with numerous platforms to compete and grow.

Of course, even among this series of tournaments from these organizers, we see that there are certain regions that do better viewership-wise. Events in Europe and South America tend to draw larger audiences when it comes to CS2 esports, and that remains true across its competitive tiers.

When looking at the events held this year by all the organizers mentioned above, we can see that the most popular names come from Europe and SA. However, other series are seeing gradual audience growth, with the two top Skyesports events by peak concurrent viewership both coming this year.

With the introduction of Counter-Strike 2, its esports scene continues to evolve and adapt, including its teams and players. Playing a vital role in this development are event organizers, especially at the lower levels of competitive play, as they conduct a lot of tournaments every year that help spot upcoming talents and also fill gaps in the calendar, which continues to get more packed with each new season.
