Dota 2 esports trends in 2024 — from new season format to community casting issues

The cancellation of regional leagues in the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) and the rise of new million-dollar tournaments have significantly impacted the competitive ecosystem of Dota 2. Esports Charts analyzed the situation to understand changes in prize pools, audience reach, and trends among major broadcasting studios. The professional Dota 2 scene is multifaceted, with its ecosystem varying greatly by region. To understand the direction the discipline is heading, we focused on the top international tournaments featuring the strongest teams in the world. We compared overall statistics for these tournaments from January to May in both 2023 and 2024. In the specified period last year, 21 big events were held, including 18 regional DPC leagues and three international tournaments: The Lima Major 2023, DreamLeague Season 19, and ESL One Berlin Major 2023. In 2024, Valve canceled the DPC leagues and majors, significantly lightening the schedule and encouraging tournament organizers to host more third-party events. Consequently, from January to May 2024, six large-scale international tournaments with million-dollar prize pools and line-ups comparable to the majors were held. While the number of tournaments in 2024 decreased threefold, these tournaments became more prestigious, consistently featuring top-tier participants and maintaining high prize pools. In 2023, most major tournaments were regional DPC leagues with prize pools of only $200,000 each. Another key difference is the number of teams participating in top tournaments. In 2023, there were 74 such teams, thanks to the DPC leagues, while this number dropped to 29 in 2024. Despite this, the total prize money slightly increased from $5.69 million to $5.96 million. The prize pools remained at the same level, but now only the top teams compete for them. Tier-2 teams, especially from weaker regions, found themselves in a difficult position after the closure of the DPC leagues. The Dota 2 esports scene is currently undergoing a phase of restructuring and adaptation; the number of teams has significantly decreased, but the competition among players has intensified. Viewership statistics reveal some interesting trends. First, the total watch time and airtime significantly decreased — by 34% and 66% respectively compared to last year. This is not surprising, given that the number of tournaments has decreased, and organizers are trying to run them more compactly, avoiding stretched-out match schedules over several weeks. Peak concurrent viewership dropped by only 4%, a negligible decrease in this context. However, the average number of viewers increased by 97%. Last year, many DPC leagues couldn't boast high average viewership, as audiences mainly tuned in to watch matches involving top teams, often ignoring the rest. Now, with million-dollar tournaments featuring only the best teams from all regions, this imbalance no longer exists. In summary, the Dota 2 audience in 2024 has become more centralized and focused on specific tournaments. It's important to note that the number of viewers hasn't decreased — esports broadcasts of the discipline continue to enjoy stable demand from the audience. Regarding broadcasting studios and main streaming channels, dota2_paragon_ru channel showed the most significant growth compared to last year. At the beginning of 2024, Paragon Studio hosted the official Russian-language cast for four out of six million-dollar tournaments: DreamLeague S22 & S23, ESL One Birmingham 2024, and PGL Wallachia Season 1. The position of ESL weakened slightly. Their broadcasts generated fewer Hours Watched on Twitch at the beginning of 2024, although their YouTube channel metrics saw some growth. It's important to note that ESL hosted the Berlin Major last year, which had a higher status than ESL One Birmingham. Majors have always been more appealing to both viewers and teams, as they were a direct path to The International. BetBoom studio has faced significant setbacks recently. This season, it covered only two out of six major tournaments: BetBoom Dacha Dubai 2024 and the Elite League. Additionally, it had to share its audience with Nix and just_ns, ambassadors of the betting company BetBoom, who often serve as community casters for the same tournaments. Interestingly, Nix and just_ns — two of the most popular Russian-speaking community casters — rarely cover tournaments owned by Paragon studio. Paragon's title sponsor is Winline, a betting company competing with BetBoom. To avoid diluting its audience, Paragon's management has imposed strict restrictions on community casting for its tournaments. Since the cancellation of the DPC leagues, the main Dota 2 community casters — Nix, just_ns, and Gorgc—have seen a significant drop in audience reach. The Russian casters, in particular, have been caught in the crossfire of studio competition, while Gorgc's metrics have declined due to the cancellation of majors and DPC leagues. Although the Swedish streamer now covers all top Dota 2 tournaments, it hasn't been enough to match last year's figures. How has the professional Dota 2 scene changed in 2024? From a player's perspective, it has become more competitive, making it harder to secure a spot in a strong team and qualify for tournaments. For viewers, the situation has changed little: matches involving top teams continue to attract roughly the same audience as before, even though top tournaments no longer carry the "Major" status. Overall, interest in tournament broadcasts and the average daily in-game activity have remained at similar levels to previous years.
