Group stage of ESL One Stockholm 2022 ended on May 15. The first Dota 2 major of the season faced many problems which definitely affected its spectator statistics. Esports Charts takes a loot at how tournament's viewership metrics have decreased compared to the previous tournament of the series, and names the most popular teams and matches of the first stage of the event.

Usually, the most intense & interesting matches are held on the final days of the stages, but it doesn’t apply to Stockholm Major. Several teams were not able to participate in the tournament, and therefore only one team left the championship after the group stage. And the name of the team was known long before the game day ended: Evil Geniuses dropped out of the championship without a single victory.

The main battle unfolded for slots in the upper bracket of the playoffs, and while additional matches were not required in group A, four teams at once took part in replays in group B: however, they did not arouse much interest among the audience. As a result, Tundra Esports, OG, BetBoom and T1 entered the winners bracket from group A. In Group B, Gaimin Gladiators, Thunder Awaken, TSM and Team Spirit performed the best.

Over the course of four game days, viewers spent more than 10.5 million hours watching matches, with an average audience of 237.8K people. It should be noted that according to both metrics, the tournament was inferior to the previous event of the series (WePlay AniMajor): thus, the total Hours Watched fell by 6%, and the average audience decreased by 10%. However, it should be noted that the drop in metrics was not the that crucial given the circumstances.

The peak audience of the tournament dropped as well. The current record of the tournament was set on the very first day, when up to 370.8K viewers watched matches, which is 15% less than the same indicator for WePlay AniMajor.

Interestingly, the top matches included games that took place on days 2-3: the most popular one was the confrontation between Evil Geniuses and BOOM Esports with 210K Peak Viewers. It should be noted that several games showed comparable audience numbers: for example, the difference between the first and fifth place was less than 8K viewers.

Statistics on languages and broadcast platforms turned out to be quite predictable. There are traditionally English-language and Russian-language streams in the top. Among the platforms, Twitch leads by a huge margin.

The current TI champions, Team Spirit, turned out to be the most popular group stage team both in terms of total Hours Watched and Average Viewers. The team's matches averaged 154K spectators, which is 31% more than the same indicator for Team Liquid, which ranks second by the metric. The top 5 also included OG, Evil Geniuses and Fnatic.

Given problems and matches, which results were of no fundamental importance, the tournament's not the most impressive spectator performance looks quite logical. Everything should change in the playoffs. The stage matches have already begun: right now Tundra Esports is facing Team Spirit in the winner's bracket. You can follow the game and its viewership statistics on the tournament page.
