M6 Swiss Stage opening day witnesses massive Indonesian viewership surge

Nov 28, 2024 3 min read

The first round of the Swiss Stage took place at the M6 World Championship on November 28, the season’s biggest tournament for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. The start of the main stage sparked huge excitement among fans, and viewership had far surpassed last year’s championship by the end of the opening day. The key driver behind this growth was the Indonesian broadcasts and community casters.

On the first day of the Swiss Stage, peak viewership hit over 1.88 million spectators, an 86% increase compared to the same period during M5. Indonesian broadcasts saw a huge jump, as local fans were eagerly anticipating the debut of RRQ Hoshi, the most popular team not just in the region, but across the entire Mobile Legends pro scene. It’s worth mentioning that RRQ Hoshi missed last year’s World Championship, but this time, they delighted fans with a win over KB Gaming. That match became the most-watched of the first round.

Thanks to the RRQ Hoshi vs. KB Gaming game, a new record was set for Indonesian language viewership at this stage of the tournament, while the Tagalog language set a record during the Falcon Esports vs. Aurora Gaming match, where the Filipino team unexpectedly lost.

Overall, nearly all major languages saw significant growth compared to the last tournament, except for English and Burmese. While the drop in English viewership was minor, Burmese viewership dropped by nearly 44%, despite one of the Burmese team’s matches being one of the three first-round games that peaked with over a million viewers.

While the spotlight was on RRQ, the real highlight of the first round was the showdown between Fnatic ONIC PH and Team Liquid ID, the champions of two of the top MPL regional leagues. This match peaked at over 1.78 million viewers, just slightly behind the RRQ Hoshi game. Overall, the team seeding turned out to be spot-on: viewers were treated to some incredible matchups right from the start, and we’re hopeful these will set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
