Esports teams are critical for viewership, as we recently saw at Worlds 2023 that T1 and Faker’s appearance in the Grand Final helped boost the event to new peak viewership heights. Throughout Q3 of 2023, some of the biggest esports events of the year took place, spanning a wide range of various esports disciplines: CS:GO hosted one of its final events before becoming CS2, Valorant Champions 2023 crowned a new world champion, and many more. Let’s see which of the many tournaments of Q3 this year, hosted the most popular and most-watched teams of the industry. Most popular esports teams of Q3 2023 #1 — Rex Regum Qeon (ML:BB) The most popular esports team of Q3 2023 was Rex Regum Qeon of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. The Indonesian organisation fields rosters in various esports disciplines, Valorant, Free Fire, and many more, but their ML:BB roster is the most popular of these. The RRQ ML:BB roster was extremely strong in the past, although they could only manage 4th place during the recent MPL Indonesia Season 12. Between 2020 and 2022, Rex Regum Qeon was able to become champions in 3 of the total 6 MPL ID seasons hosted. The roster built up a solid fanbase during these dominant years, and the loyalty of their fans is still visible in the most popular matches of the esports discipline. During MPL Indonesia Season 12, which took place in Q3 of 2023, RRQ appeared in four of the top five most popular matches of the season. Throughout Season 12 of the MPL ID, only matches featuring RRQ were able to break 2M Peak Viewers, and even the Grand Final of the event was not able to break 2M PV without RRQ. #2 — Paper Rex (Valorant) Paper Rex is an organisation based out of Singapore, although their Valorant team consists mainly of Indonesian players. During the 2023 season, Paper Rex solidified themselves as the #1 Pacific team in Valorant after winning the regional league. They moved on to the Valorant Champions 2023 event, where many fans fell in love with their play style. In contrast to other teams, Paper Rex never has a dull moment and is always pushing to make something happen in the game. Although Indonesian viewership is hugely important for mobile gaming esports disciplines like ML:BB, this audience is less powerful within the discipline of Valorant. Paper Rex did receive some support from Pacific audiences at Valorant Champions 2023, but the majority of their viewership came from English-speaking official broadcasts. The Indonesian team was unable to win the event, losing to Evil Geniuses in the final, but they solidified themselves as a formidable opponent and popular team in the discipline. #3 — Evil Geniuses (Valorant) Evil Geniuses is a North American organisation that fields teams in a wide variety of esports disciplines: Dota 2, CS2, League of Legends, Valorant, Hearthstone, Fortnite, and many more. The organisation sent their American roster to the Valorant Champions 2023 event with low expectations from the community. Although Evil Geniuses had potential, they only managed 3rd in their regional league and quickly lost 0-3 against Fnatic in the VCT Masters Tokyo event. Fnatic was in top form, and other teams looked poised to take the Championship from the final event home. Evil Geniuses managed a perfect comeback story after defeating LOUD in the Lower Bracket, advancing to the Grand Finals and defeating Paper Rex 3-1 for the title. Evil Geniuses wins the Valorant Champions 2023 event Evil Geniuses’ League of Legends roster was recently dropped from the LCS amidst concerns that the league was losing viewership and needed to be downsized, and some fans are expecting the same to happen in Valorant, due to rumours and speculation of mismanagement. Although no official announcement has been made, it is unlikely that EG will field the Championship roster next year, due to monetary restrictions. #4 — LOUD (Valorant) The final Valorant roster of our rankings, LOUD was the fourth-most popular esports team in Q3 of 2023, thanks to their performance at Valorant Champions 2023. The Brazillian organisation is always strongly supported by fans from the region, and their Valorant roster is no different. The LOUD Valorant roster was the most-watched team of the entire Valorant Champions 2023 event: with 18.7M Hours Watched accumulated. Across global Twitch chats, LOUD was mentioned over two million times during the event, and matches featuring the Brazillian roster always received huge support from Portuguese-speaking broadcasts. They lost to Paper Rex during the Upper Bracket Semifinals and were finally eliminated by Evil Geniuses in a tight 2-3 Lower Bracket Final loss. If LOUD had been able to make it to the Grand Final, peak viewership for the event would have likely been much higher and they would probably rank ahead of both Evil Geniuses and Paper Rex in this ranking. #5 — Alter Ego (ML:BB) Alter Ego is another esports organisation with a hugely popular Indonesian ML:BB roster. The roster found success after entering the MPL ID through the Qualifiers, and in 2020 they won the first-ever MPL Invitational, with an unbeaten 11-0 record. Despite their early success, they have not been able to win any other prestigious events. They managed some top 4 finishes during various MPL Indonesia seasons and finished 4th at the M2 World Championship. Although they aren’t as competitive as RRQ, they have built up a sizable fanbase during their ascension to the MPL ID, and their games continue to be some of the most-watched during the MPL. Esports teams with the most appearances in Q3 2023 Instead of the most popular teams of Q3 2023, have a look at the most prolific esports teams of the same quarter. These teams competed in the most official esports matches out of any esports teams during the quarter, and the majority of these teams are Dota 2 representatives. 9Pandas was the busiest esports team of the quarter, having played in a multitude of esports events before the beginning of The International 2023. 9Pandas competed in DreamLeague Season 21, BetBoom Dacha, and the Riyadh Masters 2023 events during Q3 of this year, although they could not win any events, they did manage to finish within the top 8 at each of these events. Monte of CS2 was the second-busiest team of Q3 2023, having played in 36 matches throughout the quarter. During the final quarter of CS:GO, Monte competed in a wide variety of events. From smaller cups like CCT East Europe Series #1 to IEM Cologne 2023, Monte competed in everything CS:GO had to offer. Although they didn’t become the champions of any event during the quarter, they still accumulated over $150K in prize pools thanks to the large amount of tournaments played. The other Dota 2 rosters on this ranking competed in many of the same events, and Gaimin Gladiators competed in the exact same three events which 9Pandas did. Gaimin Gladiators were even able to win the BetBoom Dacha event, claiming $150K USD from the event. However, their 4th place finish at Riyadh Masters 2023 was worth a sizable amount more: $1.2M. PSG Quest competed at all three of the aforementioned Dota 2 events, although their most successful performance of the quarter was at The International 2023 - Western Europe Qualifier, where they finished second and qualified for The International event. Team Liquid competed at DreamLeague Season 21, Riyadh Masters, and also The Bali Major 2023. Team Liquid was able to finish 2nd at both the Riydash Masters and Bali Major events.
