Long-awaited TODAK championship title and new record — MPL MY Season 9 overview
Last weekend, MPL Malaysia Season 9 ended along with the Indonesian league. The decisive matches of both tournaments were held almost simultaneously, and the greatest excitement was the competition for teams from Indonesia, but this barely affected the statistics of MPL MY, which reached new viewership record. Esports Charts sums up the results of the tournament and tells about its statistics.
MPL Malaysia Season 9 Results
In the ninth season — as in the previous ones — the top eight teams of the previous tournament series and the two winners of the qualifiers played again. In the group stage, the teams were divided into two groups: the top two advance to the playoffs upper bracket, and those ranked 3rd-4th — to the lower one.
One of the biggest group stage disappointments was rather poor play by the league's mid-tier team, Geek Fam. The squad lost 10 of 13 games and dropped out of the league: now it has to qualify for MPL MY again.
At the same time, one of the biggest surprises was Team Caracal which made it to the league via qualifiers. The team reached the playoffs lower bracket and won two matches there, which secured them fourth place in the event.

Orange Esports and last season's finalists TODAK encountered in the decisive match of the tournament. The former performed brilliantly in the playoffs lower bracket, where it lost only two maps in four matches: RSG Malaysia, RED, Team Caracal and Suhaz Esports were defeated in turn. On the other hand, TODAK showed a perfect performance in the Winners bracket. The only map they lost was in the Grand final, which ended up with a score of 4:1.
Thus, TODAK finally became MPL Malaysia champion. This is the second major title in the history of the team: in 2020, it won the league's sixth season, which was played by teams from Singapore as well. Now, together with Orange Esports, the team will defend the country's honor at home MLBB Southeast Asia Cup 2022, which takes place in mid-June in Kuala Lumpur.
MPL MY Season 9 Viewership Statistics
In contrast to Season 8, the MPL MY Season 9 playoffs ran almost at the same time as the decisive games of MPL Indonesia. This was one of the reasons why the event drew fewer Average Viewers than last year. However, it didn't stop the league from setting a new record by Peak Viewers.

MPL MY Season 9 was a hybrid format (online group stage and offline playoffs) tournament held from February 18 to April 24. The tournament matches were on air for 216 hours, the highest total ever for a Malaysian league. The event amassed 5.3 million Hours Watched and drew 24.6K Average Viewers.
The most popular match of the tournament was the Grand final between TODA and Orange Esports, which attracted more than 143K Peak Viewers. It should be noted that this is the only game that exceeded 100K spectators, while the other Top 5 games gathered 41-50% fewer concurrent viewers.
The most popular and watched team of the tournament is TODAK, the champion. Interestingly, the Top 5 by Hours Watched and Peak Viewers include the same teams (yet in different order), namely, HomeBois, Team Caracal, Geek Fam and Orange Esports.

Top languages and platforms
The most popular broadcasting language is Malaysian, which accounted for more than 94% of the total Hours Watched number. English, the second most watched language, was much less popular, accounting for only 6% of the total.
Unlike the Indonesian league, MPL MY Season 9 matches were not broadcast on Nimo TV, so the shutdown of the platform did not affect the statistics of the tournament. YouTube became the top platform with 48.6% of the total Hours Watched number. We should also note the large contribution of Facebook, not a very popular platform with viewers — it accounted for more than 36% of the total.

Most popular MPL MY events by HW and PV
It is worth noting that the Average Viewers number of MPL MY dropped by 23% compared to the last event in the series. But it didn't prevent Season 9 from becoming the leader by total Hours Watched, and the reason for this is that it became longest in the local league's history by airtime. Season 9 also reached new record by Peak Viewers in the history of MPL MY (including MY/SG period), as the final was watched by 143.7K Peak Viewers. It's about 4% more than MPL MY S8 had.

Despite a drop in Average Viewers number, MPL Malaysia remains the third most popular region in ML:BB Professional League after Indonesia and the Philippines. The last of these divisions ends this week, and the MPL Philippines Season 9 final is scheduled for Sunday, May 1.
