The spring season of the largest and most popular MPL league has come to an end. From mid-February, Indonesia's top teams have been competing for $300K and a spot in the first inter-regional ML:BB tournament of the year. In the decisive match of MPL ID Season 9, the finalists of the last season clashed, and this time RRQ proved to be stronger than ONIC Esports. In a new Esports Charts article, we will sum up the results of the competition, tell you about the new league record and how the NimoTV shutdown affected the online audience size.

RRQ Is Unmatched Once Again

We can hardly find a more popular ML:BB team than RRQ Hoshi. The multiple winner of the local league and international championships regularly gathers an audience of millions, and this time its fans have a reason to rejoice once again: the team won the first significant event in eighteen months.

RRQ had a successful regular season, losing only 2 games out of 14, and in the winner's bracket, the team defeated its archrival rivals EVOS Legends and ONIC Esports. In the final, Rivaldi 'R7' Fatah and his teammates encountered ONIC again: these teams played against each other in the final of the eighth season, and that time ONIC was stronger. However, this time RRQ proved its level, as the final score of the series was 4:1.

RRQ reclaim MPL ID title

RRQ has gained a phenomenal form, and now together with ONIC will probably be one of the main favorites of the upcoming Mobile Legends: Southeast Asia Cup. In June, the best teams of the MPL regional leagues will meet in Kuala Lumpur to compete for the title of MSC champion.

Tournament Viewership Statistics

MPL ID is the most popular Mobile Legends: Bang Bang regional league, and each time it attracts more and more viewers. This time, MPL ID Season 9 set new records for both Hours Watched and Peak Viewers.

League matches were broadcast from mid-February through late April for over 187 hours. In that time, the event accumulated more than 82.7 million Hours Watched and drew 442.2K Average Viewers.

EVOS Legends and RRQ Hoshi matches traditionally gather the biggest audience in the league, and this time three face-to-face matches of these teams made it into the Top 5 at once. The most popular one is the game in the eighth week of the regular season, which attracted more than 2.8 million Peak Viewers

RRQ Hoshi, EVOS Legends and ONIC Esports took 1st-3rd places among the most popular teams of the tournament by Hours Watched and Average Viewers. It should be noted that AURA Fire and Alter Ego are also in the Top 5 by both metrics.

Just before the start of the playoffs, MPL ID Season 9 lost one of its main streaming platforms, Nimo TV, which was shut down in 14 countries, including Indonesia. This service was very popular in the country, and the league was regularly followed by hundreds of thousands of viewers. Even without the playoffs, Nimo TV accounted for 23.6% of the tournament's total Hours Watched.

YouTube made the biggest contribution among the platforms with the majority of viewers who watched the event on Nimo TV. Facebook and TikTok also gathered a large audience.

During the playoffs the organizers set goals for the audience, and once reached, the viewers could take part in a draw for valuable prizes, including in-game skins, custom gaming seats and even Samsung Galaxy A Series cell phones. In total, there were five goals — from 500 to 2.5 million viewers, and the tournament did not reach only the latter: the playoffs drew slightly more than 2 million Peak Viewers at the RRQ vs. EVOS match, and 1.8 million Peak Viewers watched the finals.

As we have already said, MPL ID Season 9 became a record-breaking MPL tournament by all core metrics. The same tournaments ranked in the Top 5 by Hours Watched and Peak Viewers: the seventh season of the Philippine League also accompanied the last four Indonesian tournaments.

It should be noted that MPL ID Season 9 is one of the Top 10 most popular esports tournaments in history (excluding Chinese streaming services). In particular, it outperformed such events as PGL Major Stockholm and The International 10.

MPL ID Season 9 is the sixth most watched event by Hours Watched. For instance, it overtook League of Legends World Championships 2017-2018 by this metric.
