MPL Indonesia and Philippines Regular Seasons Week 1 recap

MPL Indonesia and Philippines Regular Seasons Week 1 recap

Feb 21, 2023 4 min read

After recently announcing its intention to add other Mobile Legends: Bang Bang tournaments to expand its esports scene in 2023, Moonton got the season underway with the Regular Seasons of the MPL Indonesia Season 11 and MPL Philippines Season 11, two of the largest and most popular regional divisions of the league. Both events started on February 17, and Week 1 has come to a close.

These competitions came hot on the heels of a successful MLBB Women's Invitational 2023 — a Southeast Asia female-only tournament and the first Moonton-hosted event of the new season. The ten-team affair saw Bigetron Era emerge victorious and claim a part of the overall purse of $30,000.

Current viewership of MPL Indonesia & Philippines

Week 1 of the MPL Indonesia Season 11 Regular Season saw nine games being completed. EVOS Legends, Rex Regum Qeon, and ONIC Esports remained unbeaten with identical 2:0 records atop the table, in that order.

The first week of the MPL Philippines Season 11 Regular Season has seen seven matches played. ECHO (2:0), Nexplay EVOS, and RSG Slate PH (both 1:0) remain the unbeaten teams at the break.

In terms of viewership, the MPL Indonesia Season 11 has done much better than the MPL Philippines Season 11, both in Hours Watched and Peak Viewers, over the first week. The former logged a monstrous 8 million watch hours among fans between February 17, 2023, and February 19, 2023, while the Philippines event registered 1.2 million HW.

The new official 2023 roadmap for MLBB esports

This is in line with the fact that Indonesia usually gets the strongest viewership stats when it comes to MLBB esports yearly. Even among events from various regions last year, it was Indonesia that outshone every other league in terms of HW.

The stats are no different when it comes to PV, as the MPL Indonesia Season 11 has registered almost a 4-time number on the MPL Philippines Season 11. The Indonesia competition saw 934K PV, while the Philippines put up 241K PV, showing that the former remains the king of MLBB esports when it comes to viewership and fan support.

In essence, compared to last year, both competitions got off to a slower start in terms of the important metrics. However, it is too early to jump to any conclusions, and the organizers will hope that Week 2 will pull in more audiences as the hunt for a place in the Playoffs gets more fierce.

What about the other regions?

The MDL acts as a development league for upcoming MLBB talents

MPL esports includes these regions: Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Brazil, and the Middle East. Two of them, as discussed above, got the Spring Season underway, while the other leagues will begin soon.

Cambodia’s season starts on February 25, 2023, followed by Malaysia (March 10, 2023), Singapore and Brazil (both March 11, 2023), and finally, MENA (March 23, 2023). Teams to represent these regions at the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Southeast Asia Cup in June will be decided from these competitions. Hence, we can expect the action to get more intense as more weeks get over.

Lastly, not only have the top division MPL leagues started but also the development leagues (MDL), with those of Indonesia and the Philippines ongoing. MDLs are amateur tournaments where member esports organizations can play aspiring rookies to improve their skills and earn a chance to move to the professional leagues.
