Top moments of Worlds 2024: G2 Esports call the referee, Team Liquid show frustration, and PSG Talon’s elimination

Top moments of Worlds 2024: G2 Esports call the referee, Team Liquid show frustration, and PSG Talon’s elimination

With the first set of playoffs matches completed, the League of Legends World Championship is already heading to the Semifinals stage. Before the final matches of Worlds 2024 come to pass, Esports Charts has taken a look back at the main event to highlight some of the most exciting moments for fans. For this purpose, we’ve taken Twitch Chat data from the major language audiences for Worlds, highlighting the highest peaks of Messages per Minute.

Unfortunately, since some of League of Legends’ largest audiences do not prefer Twitch, Asian major audiences such as Korean and Vietnamese cannot be included in this piece. Although these audiences are not included with Twitch Chat data, they are covered under our languages breakdown, which includes total watch time, peak viewership, and more. These statistics are available for Worlds 2024 through our Events Dashboard

Heading into the Semifinals at Worlds, we have two regional derbies in the form of Weibo Gaming vs Bilibili Gaming from China, and T1 vs Gen.G Esports from South Korea. While these teams and match-ups should receive sizeable viewership, there is no representation for English-speaking fans. These international English-speakers were one of the largest audiences for the group stage, and they recorded some of the highest peak Chat messages.

The most exciting moment of Worlds 2024 for English broadcasts was G2 Esports’ exit from the event. Their match against Bilibili Gaming was one of the event’s most popular games outside the playoffs, and fans did not keep quiet as G2 Esports fought against elimination. Critically, G2 Esports’ map win during the series against Bilibili was not a peak moment for this audience, but rather the team’s losses were more exciting for general fans; considering how large North American audiences are for English-language statistics, these peaks were likely bolstered by an American-European rivalry and some teasing of G2 Esports.

During the match, G2 Esports thought they noticed a bug, affecting an in-game ability which gave Bilibili an advantage during a team fight. Ultimately, the bug was determined to be cosmetic only, and had no gameplay affect. The pause for this investigation came at an awkward time, directly after a critical team fight and with the end of the game near in sight. Fans reaction to the pause alone was loud enough to be the third-most-popular moment of the event, but Bilibili’s dominant two-minute dismantling of G2 Esports after the game resumed was much more exciting for fans.

While the top moments of the stage feature G2 Esports heavily, North America also had its time to shine in the group stage. North American organization FlyQuest was paired up against top Korean competitor Hanwha Life Esports in the fourth round of the swiss stage, with many expecting HLE to roll over the North American team.

However, FlyQuest were able to take a map away from HLE, briefly tying the score 1-1, before ultimately losing 1-2. Nevertheless, FlyQuest’s map win was a massively exciting moment for all fans, with British caster Caedrel massively excited about their victory. North American fans were massively excited by FlyQuest’s win, with clear hopes for the region’s return to top competition.

Most Exciting Moments of Worlds 2024 for Spanish streams

Across the Spanish side of esports broadcasting, there were similar peaks between English and Spanish audiences for the event. Both Spanish and English were particularly excited by G2 Esports’ game against Bilibili Gaming. The match was one of the most exciting games of the stage, and it appealed to many more audiences than just English speakers cheering for G2 Esports.

For Spanish-language viewership, ibai was particularly important, with the famous Spanish streamer hosting watch parties in support of his team, MAD Lions KOI. While MDK were competing at Worlds 2024, ibai hosted in-person live watch parties from the event arena, driving viewership for both his personal Twitch channel and Worlds overall. Unfortunately, the in-person moment which saw the most Messages was his party’s reaction to MDK’s elimination by GAM Esports

After MDK’s elimination, ibai returned home but continued supporting the event from home. Although his viewership was not as strong as before, he was still a critical part of the two peaks achieved during G2 Esports’ final map against Bilibili Gaming.

Most Exciting Moments of Worlds 2024 for Portuguese (incl. Brazilian) streams

Portuguese-language Chat statistics, which also includes Brazilian-Portuguese, was the most significant audience of Worlds 2024 which relied so heavily on a single streamer. Baiano of Brazil was the most broadcaster for many fans, and in some of these listed peaks, Baiano contributed almost 60% of the total Twitch Chat traffic for the moment

The most popular moment of Worlds 2042 for Brazilian fans was Team Liquid’s loss against Weibo Gaming in the second round of swiss matches. The loss left Team Liquid sitting with a 0-2 record, although they did manage to win two more matches before being eliminated by FlyQuest. Team Liquid were in a primed spot to beat Weibo Gaming, but after stumbling, the team showed their frustrations. Fans reacting to these frustrated outbursts is likely what drove this peak for Portuguese-speaking viewers

Baiano was crucial to the second and third-most popular moments of Worlds 2024. In second place, Twitch Chat reached 48K Messages per Minute as he and his watch party reacted to paiN Gaming’s elimination from Worlds 2024 by Team Liquid. The Brazilian roster excited the swiss stage with a 0-3 record, including a loss against Korean team T1.

Just before T1’s match before paiN Gaming, the broadcast revealed some predictions for the game’s result. Baiano was one of the people asked for a prediction, and he had picked T1 to defeat paiN Gaming. The pragmatic choice was met with some outrage and laughter from his Twitch Chat, which contributed a majority of the 46.6K Messages recorded during this minute.

Most Exciting Moments of Worlds 2024 for Chinese streams

Lastly, Chinese-language audiences on Twitch were one of the few Asian Twitch audiences who were a major demographic for Worlds 2024. Chinese-language viewership on Twitch, especially for League of Legends, mostly comes from Taiwan. Gaming organization PSG Talon was previously based in Hong Kong, but moved their headquarters to Taiwan in 2023. They field an entirely Taiwanese League of Legends team, and they are clearly embracing their place as one of Taiwan’s favourite teams.

The most popular channel for this audience was lolpacifictw, the official Twitch channel for the Pacific Championship Series, which featured Taiwanese, Hong Kongese, and Japanese players in the past. The peak moment for Chinese-speaking viewers came when Taiwanese commentator JR lost control of his emotions after PSG Talon were eliminated by Bilibili Gaming. The commentator became emotional considering how hard PSG Talon had worked to get to Worlds 2024, and grieved their elimination from the event. The official Twitch Chat both mourned the loss alongside him, and consoled him, driving 24.6K Messages in one minute.

Aside from this emotional peak moment, the remainder of the top moments for viewers all featured PSG Talon even more heavily. The second-top peak came when PSG Talon defeated MDK, which was, ultimately, their only victory of the swiss stage. Fans were happy to celebrate a victory, and the peak just slightly outperformed a special Worlds 2024 broadcast intro video which heavily featured PSG Talon. The match also saw some of the highest Chat activity of the event, despite low viewership: passionate Chinese and Spanish audiences fuelled high Twitch Chat activity, coming together in this match.

Worlds 2024 playoffs continues with its Semifinals on Saturday, the 26th of October. Visit our Schedule tab for the event to keep on track of upcoming matches, and visit the tournament page for live updating viewership statistics of matches.
