Genesis X recap — Ultimate steady, Melee’s numbers see steeper fall

Feb 27, 2024 4 min read

The Genesis series was back for another run from February 16 to 19 at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, California. It saw competitions in the singles and team segments for Super Smash Bros at an event celebrating its tenth edition this year. It had competitions in games like Rivals of Aether, Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, Dance Dance Revolution, and Classic Tetris as well.

Both tournaments also ended as some of the more successful ones in terms of viewership, although there was a drop off in numbers from 2023. It has to be noted that the series was initially launched as a competition for amateurs that would also boost the development of the American fighting games community.

Genesis has now become one of the major names in the fighting games community and attracts thousands of viewers. It has also helped grow and sustain a genre that is a niche one unto itself, although fan following remains as high as ever, with interest in any tournament always bringing in a decent amount of eyeballs online and in person.

The GENESIS X Melee tournament saw 69K Peak Viewers during the clash between iBDW and Leffen in Round 4 of the Winners Bracket. The former would go on to win the entire thing after beating aMSa in the Grand Finals.

The Japanese star would end up on the podiums of both the singles and doubles competitions. The Melee segment would also hit 531.2K Hours Watched and 19.2K Average Viewers over 28 hours of airtime thanks to appearances of participants from popular esports organizations like Moist Esports, TSM, Cloud9, and Team Liquid.

The GENESIS X Ultimate competition, meanwhile, recorded 99.5K PV during Grand Finals the between Sonix and Zomba. The latter would take the win to emerge as the champion and a ticket to King Con, another tournament held from February 24 to 25 in Paris.

However, with the top five declining this invitation, it was Neo who headed to France, where he would finish in the 5th-6th bracket. With sides like Luminosity Gaming, ZETA DIVISION, and Solary, in action, this event also notched 1.2M HW and 42.1K AV over an airtime of 29 hours.

When comparing these competitions to last year's iterations, there were falls in the viewership numbers. While the Ultimate event declined by 13.9% and 10.3% in terms of watch time and peak concurrent viewership, the corresponding numbers for the Melee side were 51.6% and 44%, respectively.

This shows that interest in the events in 2023 was higher, with this also reflected in community casting, as a lot more channels covered the Genesis 9 tournaments. Some of the biggest misses this year were moistcr1tikal, coney, and kamet0, who either didn't cover the happenings this time around or were online far less.

The series' highest viewership was recorded at Genesis 6, held in February 2019, when 174.3K people watched the Super Smash Bros. matches concurrently. The pandemic then saw audiences of these events drop significantly. In 2021, it got canceled due to quarantine restrictions, and in 2022, the event was postponed by a few months, from late winter to mid-April for the same reasons. However, the Fighting Games Community in North America continues to grow, with fresh faces bringing fresh energy to niche disciplines like SSB.
