Tournament format

Twenty teams will play in TI: the top 12 from the Dota Pro Circuit ranking and one winner from each regional qualifiers in Western Europe, Eastern Europe, China, Southeast Asia, and North and South America. The remaining two slots went to the Last Chance winners.

The tournament participants were divided into two groups, where teams would play a series of round-robins. Two teams with poorest results in each group would leave the tournament. The top four teams will advance to the playoff upper bracket, while the remaining participants will be in the lower one. All group matches will be played in a best-of-2 format.

The first stage of the playoffs lower bracket will be traditionally played in best-of-1 format and the rest will be played in best-of-3 format. The participants of the Grand Final will play a series until three wins (best-of-5).

The International statistics (2017-2021)

The International is the largest tournament series in Dota 2 and one of the largest in the esports industry. It holds the record for the prize pool (over $40 million at The International 2021).

Each year, The International tournaments attract more and more viewers and improve in all metrics. For example, the 2021 championship accumulated over 100 million Hours Watched and drew 2.7 million Peak Viewers. That year's winner was the Russian team Team Spirit, which will defend its title in Singapore.
