Esports Charts ranks different aspects of the esports industry every month, and with May done and dusted, it is time to get to work recounting the most popular tournaments from last month on different metrics. A League of Legends competition ended as the most popular for the first time this year, while MLBB continued its streak of making every such list in 2023. Read on to find out more.

Chinese streaming platforms were not included in the statistics due to the unreliability of the data they provide.

The Mid-Season Invitational 2023, the most important League of Legends tournament over the first half of the year, is also the most popular event for May. The meeting between T1 and eventual winner JD Gaming from the Upper Bracket Final in the Playoffs was the clincher, hitting 2.2M Peak Viewers. Thus, it becomes the first LoL competition to top such a ranking for this year after a few near-misses and top-five finishes in prior months.

Coming in second is the BLAST.tv Paris Major 2023, which did 1.5M PV thanks to the match between Team Vitality and GamerLegion from the Champions Stage Grand Final. As the third most popular CS:GO tournament ever, it gave the game a fitting send-off before fans herald the arrival of Counter-Strike 2.

Third is the first of three straight Mobile Legends: Bang Bang competitions, starting with the 32nd SEA Games - Men's Tournament, which recorded 1.4M PV on Day 1. MLBB was one the few success stories at the biennial multi-discipline competition hosted in Cambodia, continuing its run as perhaps the eminent esports smartphone title globally.

Next comes the historic 32nd SEA Games - Women's Tournament, which hit a mind-boggling 1.3M PV during the Indonesia versus Philippines tie on Day 2. As a result, this MLBB event became the most popular female esports event of all time, beating the second-placed name by almost a million viewers and vindicating the organizer’s decision to split MLBB into men’s and women’s segments this time around.

Rounding off the top five is the MPL Philippines Season 11, which despite running for just one week in May managed to place this high on the rankings. It did 936K PV for the Playoffs Grand Final clash between Blacklist International and ECHO, which the latter won 4-0 to qualify for the MLBB Southeast Asia Cup 2023 as champion.

Most popular English-only events from May 2023  Most popular English-only events from May 2023

In the first spot for only English-language viewers is the BLAST.tv Paris Major 2023 with 908K PV for the game between Team Vitality and GamerLegion from the Grand Final of the Champions Stage. As a result, the French organization qualified for the IEM Cologne 2023 and BLAST Premier World Final, aside from taking home $500K and 3.5K BLAST Premier points.

Next is the MSI 2023, which recorded 492K PV during the Playoffs Upper Bracket Final that pitted T1 and JD Gaming against each other. This is not surprising considering English was the most popular broadcast language at the competition, accruing 26.6% of the total Hours Watched number.

In third place is the VCT 2023: Americas League which notched 259K PV for the derby between Sentinels and FURIA Esports. Despite their popularity and prior success, the two sides failed to do anything of note, finishing sixth and seventh to head to the Last Chance Qualifier, where only one unit can win and make it to the Valorant Champions 2023.

The 32nd SEA Games - Men's Tournament for MLBB takes the fourth spot after reaching 250K PV on Day 1. Following it is the ESL One Berlin Major 2023 with 224K PV, achieved when Team Liquid faced Gaimin Gladiators in the Grand Finals of the Playoffs. The latter won 3-1 to clinch $200K and 500 DPC points, while the tournament, which only ran for the first week of May, didn’t differ much from The Lima Major 2023 in terms of the number of viewers despite high expectations.  Most popular channels in May 2023

Atop this list is the official blastpremier English channel with 440K PV for the Team Vitality versus GamerLegion bout from the Grand Final of the Champions Stage at the BLAST.tv Paris Major 2023. It is one of two CS:GO channels from the above tournament to make this leaderboard, with the other being the official BLAST channel that came in fourth. It did 191K PV for the European derby between G2 Esports and Fnatic, a contest the Swedish side won 2-1, although none of them qualified for the Champions Stage.

Second is official riotgames channel which hit 232K PV for the MSI 2023 game between T1 and JD Gaming. Following him in third is the 2nd official blast channel that was covering the CS:GO Paris Major. It did 191K PV for the Fnatic vs G2 Esports in Legends Stage.

The only community caster to enter top-5 is Baiano, former pro League of Legends player turned streamer, who was following LOUD's games at MSI 2023. During the game of his compatriots against Detonation FocusMe over 154K concurrent viewers were cheering for the Brazilian team on his channel.

Note: Among all the gaming competitions, Twitch Rivals Rust Team Battle III was quite popular, getting 254K PV.
